UAF Summer Sessions & Lifelong Learning offers a variety of non-credit bearing classes accessible to members of the community without the requirements of typical college courses. Many of these courses are practical, hands-on workshop style classes taught by local experts.

From Camera Roll to Keepsake: A Photo Curating Workshop
Instructor: JR Ancheta
Meets: October 4 and 5, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm
Location: Murie 107, UAF Campus
Description: Do you have hundreds, or even thousands of photos from a favorite trip
or special event hiding on your phone or computer? In this two-day workshop, you’ll
learn practical strategies for culling and curating your images to find the true highlights.
With guided support, you’ll edit down to a meaningful collection of 25 “best hits”
and design a beautiful digital photo book using a simple, user-friendly platform that
you can continue to use at home. Along the way, you’ll develop habits and tools for
managing your photo library, ensuring your memories are organized, accessible, and
ready to share. Please bring your laptop or tablet.

Introduction to Pickleball
Instructor: Kayla Clark
Meets: October 7 - 23, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12pm - 1pm
Location: UAF SRC
Description: Are you curious to try out the fastest growing sport in the USA? Pickleball
is a net sport that takes elements of tennis and ping pong, combining them into a
game that is accessible for kids as well as senior citizens. This course will cover
the basics of serving, dinking, volleys, lobs, rules of game play and more! Six sessions
will have you feeling confident to join in on Open and Relish Play with the Farthest
North Pickleball Club. Beware, this game is quite addicting and very social too!

Fresh Start Fitness
Instructor: Gavin Meggert
Meets: October 13 - November 19, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5pm - 6pm
Location: U Park Gymnasium
Description: This class is designed for beginners and anyone returning to exercise
after a break. We will utilize simple bodyweight and band exercises to reduce the
risk of injury, improve balance, and maximize mobility and body function. Each session
will focus on safe and effective exercises that prepare you for everyday life, while
providing you with the tools to keep moving forward. You will be able to continue
doing all the exercises at home — no gym needed! No experience is required. Bands
will be provided; please bring a yoga mat. Join us and start your fitness journey
this fall!

An Intro to Rock Climbing
Instructor: Emily Smola
Meets: October 16 - November 20, Thursdays, 6pm - 7:30pm
Location: SRC Climbing Wall, UAF Campus
Description: Join us for a fun-filled six-week intro to rock climbing course at the
SRC climbing wall! This course will teach you the basics of rock climbing, so that
you can enjoy this amazing activity. Topics that we will cover include belay technique,
basic climbing movement, anchor building, indoor/ outdoor climbing comparisons, how
to best use each climbing hold type, and how to manage the risks involved with climbing.
We want to set you up for success, enabling you to enjoy rock climbing and achieve
your goals.

Cooking with Jennifer
Instructor: Jennifer Jolis and Nicky Eisman
Meets: October 17, Friday, 6 pm - 9 pm
Location: Hutchison Kitchen
Description: The Fairbanks restaurant, A Moveable Feast (1983-1989), remains in the
memories of those who ate there. One thing still stands out in diners' memories is
the ever-changing array of fresh, flavorful, tempting salads. Owner and Fairbanks
chef extraordinaire, Jennifer Jolis, is prepared to share some of those salad recipes
with twelve lucky locals. In addition, she will share a recipe for a dessert that,
like her little red Miata, goes everywhere and is always a hit. You'll be doing the
cooking, with her guidance and recipes, and then everyone will sit down to enjoy a
fabulous meal together.

Put a Ring on It!
Instructor: Patricia Carlson
Meets: October 18 and 19, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 5 pm
Location: Art 403, UAF Campus
Description: Learn to make silver rings for your fingers! We will practice first in
copper with stampings and possibly piercings. We will solder it together to check
the fit and polish it. Then we'll make the silver ring with the same process. We may
rollerprint the second ring if desired. Students will learn fundamental metalsmithing
techniques including sawing, filing, sanding, stamping, soldering, cleaning and polishing.
The studio's tools will be available for use, but students who need and have magnification
should bring it. If you have a stamping hammer, you should bring that, too.

Creative Collage
Instructor: Jessie Hedden
Meets: October 25, Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm

Description: Collage is a playful and expressive art form that invites you to experiment
with color, shape, and texture. In this one-day workshop, open to all experience levels,
you’ll be introduced to the history of collage through a short lecture highlighting
influential 20th-century artists. Then, you’ll dive into hands-on exploration, creating
your own small collages with an assortment of provided colored papers (and any personal
materials you’d like to bring along). We’ll cover design considerations unique to
collage, such as cutting versus tearing, assembly techniques, and effective gluing
methods, while encouraging individual creativity and discovery.

Morning Groove: Start Your Day with a Dance Party!
Instructor: Reina Hasting
Meets: October 28-December 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 am - 7:30 am
Location: SRC Group Fitness Studio, UAF Campus
Description: This high-energy cardio dance class is the perfect way to kickstart your
morning. We blend easy-to-follow moves with upbeat world rhythms and chart-topping
hits to get your body moving and your spirits lifted. You'll sweat, smile, and get
a full-body workout that feels more like a dance party than exercise. All fitness
levels are welcome—just bring your energy and get ready to groove! This class meets
for ten sessions. There are no classes the week of Thanksgiving.

Picture-Perfect Holidays: Create Your Own Photo Cards
Instructor: JR Ancheta
Meets: November 1 and 2, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 4 pm
Location: Murie 107, UAF Campus
Description: Celebrate the season with a unique two-day photography workshop where
you’ll capture and design your very own holiday cards. On day one, learn the basics
of portrait photography before heading to Pioneer Park, where snow-dusted cabins,
twinkling lights, and winter trees create the perfect ŔÖ»˘Ö±˛Ąn backdrop. Invite your
family, friends, or even pets to join you for a festive photo session. On day two,
return to the lab to cull and edit your photos, choose your favorite, and design a
custom holiday card using a simple online platform. By the end, you’ll not only have
professional-quality photos but also a set of holiday cards ready to order and share
with loved ones. Bring a digital camera or your phone, as well as a laptop or tablet
for editing.

Knitting for Beginners and Beyond
Instructor: Ginny Kinny
Meets: November 7, 10, and 11, 6pm - 9pm
Location: Murie 107, UAF Campus
Description: This course is designed for brand-new knitters and those who have recently
learned to knit and want to continue developing their skill set. During this course,
students will learn the basics of knitting techniques, the language used, and the
materials involved. We will discuss the differences between Continental and English-style
knitting, learn the knit and the purl stitch, and understand how to identify and fix
mistakes. The course will also teach you about the materials and tools involved in
knitting and, most importantly, what’s needed and not needed to knit and finish a
project. Brand new participants will knit a hat in class, and returning students will
knit a pair of mittens. Everyone will leave with the skills to keep on knitting! Yarn
and needles will be provided.

Embroidered Birch Bark Ornaments
Instructor: Lyndsi Harris
Meets: November 8 and 9, Saturday and Sunday, 1 pm - 4 pm

Description: Join Lyndsi of Evolutionary Thread Designs to create a beautiful embroidered
birch bark ornament. Students will select their favorite pattern and work with Lyndsi
to first paint with watercolors, add embroidered details, and finally finish the birch
bark ornament with a beautiful beaded edge. This class is designed for students of
all levels, from complete beginners to advanced embroidery enthusiasts. All materials
will be provided.

Beaded Earring Workshop
Instructor: Carol Wilbur
Meets: November 15, Saturday, 12 pm - 4 pm

Description: Students will explore several simple earring-making techniques in this
fun, hands-on workshop. We will work primarily with beads and wire. The instructor
will provide tools, metal findings, and various glass, metal, and semi-precious beads.
Although materials will be provided, students are encouraged to bring their bead collections
if they have one. Spend the day learning a new skill and making holiday gifts for
friends, family, and yourself!

Cyanotypes: Handmade Photo Art made with Light
Instructor: Jason Lazarus
Meets: November 22 - 23, Saturday and Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm
Location: Bunnell 106, UAF Campus
Description: Learn how to easily create art with light-sensitive chemicals safely
within your own home! Cyanotype solution can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces
and you can use anything to create a composition, from your own digital images turned
into analog prints to stencils, cutouts, 3D objects, your own body, etc. This course
will focus on exploring what can be done on a variety of paper surfaces and then dive
further in the creative potential of the process by exploring toning options to drastically
alter the color of these handmade prints with household solutions.

Mental Health First Aid
Instructor: Justine Schmidt
Meets: December 1, 3, and 8, Mondays and Wednesday, 5:30pm - 7:30 pm

Description: Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand, and
respond to signs of mental health and substance abuse challenges among adults. The
course covers common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance abuse, how
to interact with a person in crisis, how to connect a person with help, and more.
Learn how to respond with the five-step Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).
This course is designed by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and is led by
a certified instructor.

All registrations for Non-credit Short Classes are completed through CampDoc. Please visit the Campdoc website at to create a profile and register for classes. If you have previously registered with CampDoc, you will not need to create a new profile.
Payment can be made during registration through CampDoc. Please note that Non-credit Short Classes require a $25.00 non-refundable deposit that must be paid at the time of registration. The final payment is due 1 week before the class start date. If you register for a class and decide not to attend, you MUST drop the course via CampDoc a week before the start date or you will be charged for the full class. How do I find out more information about Parking?
If your Non-credit Short Class takes place on campus between 8 am-5 pm, Monday-Friday, you will be required to have a current parking decal or short term parking permit displayed in your vehicle.
